Frequently Asked Questions

Do I qualify for pricing discounts?

If the player belongs to an academy/junior team league/University team that is a member of the Epitome project, certain discounts are available – see Pricing.

What role does genetics play in the overall analysis?

Performance is a function of nature and nurture. Genetics are the nature part and while genetics are important, the nurture contribution often has a stronger effect on the overall outcome. Know genetic predispositions helps form highly personal training protocols to maximize natural predispositions, and optimize performance where natural predispositions aren’t present.

How is the genetic sample collected?

It is a simple, non-invasive process. We use a cheek swab (a medical-grade q-tip) to collect a small sample of cells from the inside of your cheek. No blood, no needles, and it takes less than 30 seconds.

What exactly are you looking for in the sample?

We focus exclusively on Performance & Longevity Markers. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • The ACTN3 Gene: Often called the “sprinter gene,” it helps determine explosive power vs. endurance.
  • Recovery Markers: Genes that influence how quickly muscles repair and how the body handles inflammation.
  • Stress Response: Predispositions toward mental resilience, elasticity, focus and recovery.

We are NOT looking for medical diagnoses or ancestry.

Does Epitome guarantee results?

No. Epitome assesses predispositions based on genetic markers and development-years environmental factors. While predispositions may provide an advantage, those advantages can be either enhanced or diminished by training and external events.

Who owns the data once the test is complete?

You do. Please see “Data and Privacy”.

What happens to the physical sample after it’s processed?

After processing, the physical swab is destroyed, typically within a few months.

How do I pay?

Email transfer to jimdurward72@gmail.com

Is this a one-time cost?

Typically Yes. This is because a player’s genetic markers and development years variables cannot change so there is no need to redo the genetic swab. This said, the mental aspect of the overall score CAN change and players may want to re-test the questionnaire part to review the effect of their mental training.
